As an agency, we recognize that it’s important to stay up to date on accessibility and at times within compliance for the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards. The United States of America utilizes the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG).
The W3C Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI) is to ensure that there is conformance in all disabled persons’ abilities to access the internet without feeling disenfranchised or discriminated against because of their disability.
When people thing of web accessibility, the first thought is typically for blind people and the use of a screen reader. While the screen reader is part of what makes up an accessible website, there are more factors that are brought in like people with learning disabilities or cognitive disabilities. The idea is that anyone can access the web without problems.
There are many accessibility requirements that determine the accessibility standards. Some of these standards are for specific markup structure (the code behind your website), there is a significant part on keyboard focus navigation, screen readers and having a high contrast in colors for those that are colorblind. The list is quite extensive. This wide variety of avenues leads many websites open to lawsuits for non-conformance.
During the course of building out new websites, although we aren’t liable, we make a proper effort to meet the standards of WCAG. We can also have our developers work through an audit and fix the problems found to help you reduce the issues you are finding. This is mostly done as a “per page” service. That is not a replacement for our work identified below.
Below, we cover some of the details surrounding full websites, larger projects and monthly certification of meeting the accessibility standards
Our agency has partnered with Online ADA to provide the highest quality of service for our clients and government contracts. Online ADA will audit your website against the accessibility guidelines set forth by the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG).
While the process and service details are extensive, the one time process can be simplified below. Currently, all audits are executed against WCAG 2.1, levels A and AA.
1. Audit.
2. Developer support to fix.
3. Audit.
4. Developer support to fix. (As needed).
5. Audit (As needed)
6. If compliant, certification is issued.
We also support ongoing compliance services, where regular audits will be conducted on your website. This is necessary because websites are generally modified regularly. When changes are made to your website, it can slip in our out of compliance.
Here is our insurance coverage for ADA compliance services.
1. Commercial General Liability: $1,000,000 per occurrence
2. Employer’s Liability: Limits not less than $1,000,000
3. Umbrella Liability Coverage: Sits excess of those policies noted above with a limit of $1,000,000
4. Errors & Omissions (E&O): Limit of $1,000,000 per occurrence/$1,000,000 aggregate
These ongoing services include litigation support as needed. Online ADA will only litigate cases under the following situations (which covers most/all situations):
A) Receive a demand/threat letter from a party who claims that your website is lacking WCAG (ADA) compliance features.
B) Are sued for lack of WCAG (Digital Accessibility) compliance features.
